GRTC News
Closure Dates : August 31–September 11*
Temporary transfer points located along 9th Street between East Leigh and East Marshall streets
*Dates may change based on weather & construction conditions
The Downtown Transfer Station (DTS) will temporarily close on Monday, August 21, for approximately two weeks while worn and deteriorating pavement in the station’s bus bays is repaired and repaved. During the closure, temporary transfer points will be set up along 9th Street between Leigh and Marshall streets to keep riders moving.
To find your bus, look for the sign for your usual bay and follow directions from on-site GRTC staff. The temporary locations for bays A through E will be on 9th street between East Marshall and East Clay, the temporary locations for bays F through K will be on 9th Street between East Clay and East Leigh, and bay L will be around the corner on E Leigh at Leigh & 9th.
Why is this work needed?
Thousands of bus trips move through the Downtown Transfer Station each week, and the constant movement and weight of buses have taken a toll on the pavement.
Crews will mill and repave the affected bus bays and complete concrete work at the station entrance and exit. The work will address deteriorating pavement and create a smoother, more durable surface for buses moving through the station.
The temporary closure will allow crews to complete this necessary maintenance safely and efficiently while improving the station for riders and operators over the long term.
What riders should expect
Bus service will continue throughout the project. While the DTS is closed, routes that normally serve the station will instead use temporary transfer points along 9th Street between East Leigh and East Marshall streets.
We understand that catching your bus at a different location, especially when making a transfer downtown, can be inconvenient. Our goal is to make the temporary setup as easy to navigate as possible while this important work is completed.
Riders may need to walk farther between some routes and should plan for a little additional travel time when making connections downtown.
Stay tuned for updates
The August 31 through September 11 construction window is currently a target and may shift depending on weather and the final construction schedule.
Riders should continue to check rideGRTC.com, the Transit App, GRTC social media and on-site signage for the latest information.
We appreciate your patience during this temporary disruption and look forward to welcoming riders back to a smoother, improved Downtown Transfer Station.
