Expanded microtransit service brings new transit access to Lakeside, reaching 2,100 additional residents and 1,400 jobs beginning October 19.
RICHMOND, Va. — The Greater Richmond Transit Company and Henrico County are expanding transit access in the Lakeside community with an extension of the Azalea LINK microtransit service area beginning Monday, October 19.
The expansion adds approximately one square mile to the existing Azalea LINK zone, bringing public transportation to areas of Lakeside that previously had no GRTC service. The expanded zone will reach approximately 2,100 additional residents and 1,400 jobs.
New destinations within the service area include Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Bryan Park, Belmont Park, Westminster Canterbury, Lakeside Senior Living and CSL Plasma.
“We’re excited to bring LINK to more of Lakeside, especially to neighborhoods that haven’t had access to GRTC service before,”said Sheryl Adams, CEO of GRTC. “This expansion is about reaching more people, removing transportation barriers and making it easier for residents to get where they need to go.”
“Connectivity is a significant priority for Henrico County, and our ongoing partnership with GRTC on expansion projects like this one is a testament to that,” said Henrico County Board of Supervisors Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III, of the Fairfield District. “The extension of LINK service to the Lakeside area will improve access to jobs and amenities for residents in Fairfield and will bring new opportunities for businesses in the area. I’m excited to continue working with GRTC to enhance connectivity for residents and businesses countywide.”
LINK is GRTC’s on-demand microtransit service, providing flexible, curb-to-curb transportation within designated service zones. The service helps expand public transportation access in areas where traditional fixed-route bus service is limited or may not easily reach residents and destinations.
Riders can book trips by downloading the GRTC On the Go app or by calling GRTC Customer Service at (804) 358-4782.
Azalea LINK operates Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Like all GRTC services, LINK operates under GRTC’s Open Access program.
