Six Years of Connection: Celebrating Open Access Transit in Richmond

March 16, 2026

GRTC News

Join GRTC and RideFinders on March 27 as we celebrate six years of fareless service across the Richmond region.

In March 2020, GRTC launched Zero Fare bus service across the Richmond region. What began as a public health response during the pandemic quickly became something much bigger.

Today, that service has grown into an Open Access transit network that helps thousands of residents reach jobs, healthcare, school, and everyday destinations.

Over the past six years, GRTC buses have helped riders connect to more than 230,000 jobs across the Richmond region while also reaching record ridership of more than 12 million trips. Public transit continues to play an important role in supporting economic opportunity, community mobility, and regional growth.

To mark six years of fareless service, GRTC and RideFinders invite the community to gather for an evening celebrating the impact transit has had across the region.
