GRTC is honoring Transit Equity Day on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, Rosa Parks’ birthday, by reserving a seat in recognition of her courage and lasting impact on public transportation and civil rights.

Rosa Parks made history in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her action helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott and became a turning point in the civil rights movement, inspiring generations to stand up for fairness and equality.

“At GRTC, we believe every rider deserves the freedom to move with dignity and access,” said Sheryl Adams, CEO of GRTC. “Our zero-fare, open-access system is one way we honor Rosa Parks’ legacy, making sure everyone in the Richmond region can reach jobs, schools, healthcare, and opportunity without barriers.”

Transit Equity Day is also a moment to reflect on how reliable public transit strengthens communities. It connects people to essential services and helps ensure that access and opportunity do not depend on income, race, or neighborhood.

GRTC continues Rosa Parks’ legacy by keeping communities moving and giving everyone the freedom to thrive.
