June 2025 Service Changes
June 24, 2025
GRTC News
On June 29th, changes to Route 88, Route 19, and the Pulse will go into effect, and on June 30th, we’ll be expanding two LINK microtransit service zones. As part of our continued efforts to improve rider experience and align with industry best practices, we are also launching a new destination sign naming convention across our fixed-route services on June 29th.
June 30th LINK Zone Expansions
We’re excited to announce the Powhatan and Sandston LINK microtransit zones are expanding! LINK offers on-demand rides anywhere within the service zone. Install the “GRTC on the Go” app to book a ride, or call customer service for help at (804) 358-GRTC (4782)!
Sandston Zone Expansion

Based on ridership, we are taking out the eastern portion to serve more high-demand destinations on the western end. This change keeps rides efficient and wait times low, and increases the service area by 6.5 sq mi.
The expanded zone covers the service area of Route 56, which will end service on September 28, 2025. If you rode Route 56, LINK now gives you more flexibility and connects to key routes!
LINK service is On-Demand, operating in Sandston Monday through Friday, from 5 AM to 8 PM. The average wait time is about 20 minutes.
Fixed route connections:
- 4A & 4B
- 7A & 7B
- 91
- PULSE
New coverage areas:
- Fulton
- Marion Hill
- Rocketts Landing
- Jacob L Adams Elementary School
- George F Baker Elementary School
- John Rolfe Middle School
- Varina High School
- White Oak Village
Powhatan Zone Expansion

We’re expanding service to the entire county—our biggest zone yet! With a 252 sq mi increase to the service area, this is a major step in bringing more coverage to rural areas. Riders can transfer to Route 1A to connect into GRTC’s full fixed-route network.
We’re adding new “Pockets” of service for popular destinations outside Powhatan, designed to give riders access to shopping, dining, entertainment, and more.
LINK service is On-Demand, operating in Powhatan Monday through Friday, from 6 AM to 7 PM. Expect an average wait time of about 60 minutes due to the large coverage area.
Fixed route connection:
- 1A
New coverage areas:
- Westchester Commons
- Chesterfield Towne Center
June 29th Destination Sign Overhaul
We’re shifting to a clearer, simplified template that emphasizes the end destination (where the bus is going) and the key corridor (major street or area the route travels through). Instead of cycling through sometimes four or more destination messages, each route will rotate through only two screens.

The change is shown above, using Route 1 as an example. This new style improves legibility and clarity, and mirrors transit trends seen in peer systems nationwide, where simplicity and consistency in signage play a critical role in improving accessibility and rider confidence.
