How old is GRTC Transit System and when did it begin?
GRTC Transit System traces its roots back to 1860, when the Virginia Railway and Power Company built the first successful street railway service in the United States in Richmond Virginia. Virginia Transit Company, its successor company, operated the Richmond transit system from 1944 to 1962, when it was purchased by American Transportation enterprises. It was sold in 1973 to the Greater Richmond Transit Company, an instrumentality of the City of Richmond, and became incorporated in April 1973 for the purpose of providing public transportation services to the Greater Richmond area. Chesterfield County purchased half the company in 1989 and, in November 2000, it became GRTC Transit System.
 
Who is GRTC Transit System owned by?
GRTC Transit System is 50% owned by the City of Richmond, and 50% by Chesterfield County. Its Board of Directors consists of six members – three appointed by the Richmond City Council and three by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors.
 
What areas are serviced by GRTC Transit System?
GRTC Transit System services the City of Richmond, Henrico County, and a small portion of Chesterfield County. There are also two Extended Express routes available that service the City of Petersburg and the City of Fredericksburg.
 
Why doesn’t GRTC Transit System operate in my area?
GRTC Transit System can only operate at the authorization and funding of each individual locality.
 
How many routes does GRTC Transit System operate?
At present time, GRTC operates 23 Local Routes and 12 Express Routes (including Extended Express Routes).
 
What are your hours of operation?
City of Richmond: 5:00am – 1:00am, 7 days a week

Henrico County : 6:00am – 7:00pm, Monday through Friday (No Weekend Service)

Please note that not all routes operate on all days. Please consult the individual route schedules for details.

 
How much is the fare?
Fares range from $1.25 to $6.00 and must be paid with exact fare or by Go Card. Please see the Fare/Rates section of the website for details.
 
Are the buses wheelchair accessible?
Yes, our fleet is 100% wheelchair accessible.
 
How can I get route and schedule information?

Route and schedule information is available via telephone, Internet, and print.

Telephone : The Customer Service Center is open from 6:30am to 7:00pm, Monday through Friday and from 8:30am to 5:00pm on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.

Internet : Please click on the Schedules & Routes link or use GRTC’s Trip Planner to plan your trip.

Print : Local and Express Ride Guides are available through the Customer Service Center and select retail locations. Additionally, Individual Route Schedules are available on all GRTC buses.

 
How do I register a compliment or concern?

Are discounted fares available?

Discounted fares are available through our Reduced Fare Program for people 65 years of age or older, and for people with certain types of disabilities. To download an application, please visit the Active Seniors section of our website.

What is GRTC’s Comprehensive Operational Analysis?
Recognizing that transit systems must periodically be evaluated and modified to meet changing demand, the GRTC Transit System is completing a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) that reviews and recommends ways of making the company’s transit services more effective and efficient. The end result is a principal tool for the strategic planning and operation of GRTC’s public transportation services in the region.
